Crash Dummy Makes PSA

May 25th, 2007 by Vinny

New Jersey Governor John Corzine, who in April was in an accident that nearly killed him when his driver was flying (literally) on the Garden State Parkway and he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, has done exactly what I said he was going to do.

The day after his accident, I wrote the following:

Expect any and all of the following from the crash dummy:

1. New PSA’s about the importance of seatbelt wearing lest you end up like him.
2. A spate of enforcement, the likes of which will lead people to think that everything is safer and the government is looking out for them.
3. A bunch of schmucks commending him for his bravery but not condemning him for his blatant and obvious stupidity.

We’ll keep you posted as any of those develop.

Well… Here’s #1:

We’ve already seen enough of #3, and I don’t live in New Jersey so I don’t know if #2 is happening but something tells me it is…

Anyway, just thought I’d share.

More on Congestion Pricing

May 24th, 2007 by Vinny

Not to pick on Chris, because he’s a friend of mine, but a few months ago when he wrote about congestion pricing, he mentioned that people in Manhattan would hate the idea because they would have to pay more to, for example, go home. I stipulated that most people in Manhattan don’t drive anyway and probably would love the idea.

Well guess what? I was right

Manhattan voters support congestion pricing 62 - 29 percent. Voters in other boroughs are opposed to the proposal:

- 67 - 26 percent in The Bronx;
- 63 - 29 percent in Brooklyn;
- 61 - 32 percent in Queens;
- 69 - 26 percent in Staten Island.

By a 3 - 1 margin, 68 - 23 percent, New York City voters say they use mass transit, rather than a car, to travel into and out of Manhattan. Car drivers oppose congestion pricing 59 - 34 percent while mass transit users oppose it 53 - 40 percent.

So Staten Island, where most of the people who drive in this entire city live, is most opposed to the idea, while, by almost an equal margin, people in Manhattan are for it.

It’s starting to become clear that it’s really the inconsiderate outer borough assholes who drive into Manhattan during rush hour and peak time that really don’t like the idea. Of course they don’t! This is designed to keep their inconsiderate asses in their own borough!

(Chris: You know I love ya man, but every time I mention congestion pricing, your name is gonna come up. It’s just the way of the world.)
